The Akbarpur and Jalalpur shops take ₹50 to ₹90 for a blade shave and ₹100 to ₹150 once the hot towel, the brush lather and the alum are in. Salons on the main road ask ₹200 to ₹450. Those are the rates all year round and they do not move much.
Tanda's weaving households keep the loom going into the night and the barbers there have arranged themselves around it, so a chair at nine in the evening is normal rather than a favour. The morning trade is thinner there. A man off a loom usually takes the head massage along with the shave.
The thermal plant at Tanda runs round the clock and the shops nearest it open early enough for the night duty coming off. A shave at seven in the morning is unremarkable on that road. Keep to the plain version if you are heading straight back in, since a newly shaved face under a hard hat all day is not comfortable.
Occasionally, and a barber here will say as much if you ask him straight. The hollow of the throat under the jaw is where the hair changes direction and where most of it happens. A careful hand slows right down at that turn instead of pretending the problem is not there.
Once a week suits most men who shave themselves the rest of the time, and two days of growth is the right amount to walk in with. A single morning's stubble is not enough for a blade to take hold of. More than a week and it has to be clipped down before the lather, which adds to the time and sometimes to the bill.
